Charles Shannon
This path is known to cemetery insiders as ‘millionaire’s row’ because of its parade of impressive family tombs.
Charles Shannon arrived from Greenock, Scotland, in 1865 where he joined his cousin in the wool trade. In 1875, Shannon married Emily Strachan and became a partner in the wool broking firm of Strachan, Murray and Shannon. Charles also became involved in community life, holding many official positions: Mayor of Newtown, Captain of Barwon Rowing Club, member of the Hospital Committee, chairman of Geelong College Council of Management and president of Geelong Chamber of Commerce. The Shannon family lived at St. Helen’s and later ‘Kirrewur Court’, Newtown.
