Colac Cemetery

Gravesend Street, Colac

Colac was settled by Europeans as early as 1837 but it was not until the 1850s that land was set aside for the cemetery. Early records indicate that many children died before they were two years of age, and that there were a number of burials of itinerant farm workers. Volunteers kept the graves and paths in good condition and residents were encouraged to ‘walk through the cemetery in order to contemplate the fragility of life.’ The cemetery has a number of ANZAC reminders.
