Edward Gardiner OAM
Eddie Gardiner, fourth generation Gisborne local was born in Woodend (No Gisborne Hospital) third son (with one sister) of Alec Gardiner and Norrie O’Sullivan. Educated at St Brigid’s School and Assumption College, he was apprenticed to the long established family business (1863-2013) of Gardiners Garage, known for its Workshop, Roadside Repairs, Tow Trucks and RACV Service Depot.
He and elder brother Peter continued the operation of the business for 56 years retiring in 2013.
An active member of the Gisborne community; Hall of Famer And Life Member of The Gisborne Football Netball Club, playing over300 games; and a Life Member of The Gisborne Cricket Club, contributing to several committees. A keen local historian, he has been a guest speaker at many functions. A Trust Member of the Gisborne Cemetery Trust since 2002. Eddie received an Order of Australia Medal in 2016, for “Service to the Community of Gisborne”
He retired as a Trust Member in 2017, when the cemetery merged with Geelong Cemeteries Trust, and became a Cemetery Community Advisory Committee member in 2018.
Eddie is well known for guiding cemetery tours, using his vast historical knowledge which has now been adapted as a self-guided walk.
