Varey Family
Behind the old Peppercorn Tree is a leaning headstone telling the heart- aching story of the Varey family, who owned the Corio Hotel in Yarra Street. Jane Varey, aged 47 years and her newborn daughter died after complications in childbirth in 1851. This was after four other children had died in infancy. Her husband Robert died in 1855, aged 46, and their only surviving child followed them in 1858, aged 14.
