A Guide to Collecting Ashes

At the time of arranging the cremation/funeral

As part of the cremation/funeral arrangement, the Funeral Director will assist you in nominating whether you wish to collect your loved ones ashes directly from us, or if you wish for your chosen Funeral Director to collect the ashes on your behalf.

The person who signs the legal cremation documentation becomes known as the Authorising Person, and is the only person allowed to collect the ashes of a loved one that is in our care.

The Authorising Person also has the authority to nominate another person to collect ashes on their behalf. This nomination requires approved written permission.

Following cremation

Following cremation, ashes are sealed in an urn with an identifying label. The ashes are then transferred to our main office for safekeeping until collection.

If you made the decision at the time of arranging the cremation/funeral to have your chosen Funeral Director to collect the ashes they will perform this duty on your behalf as previously arranged.

If at the time of arranging the cremation/funeral you elected to collect your loved ones ashes directly from us, a member of our friendly client services team will make contact with you to advise that your loved ones’ ashes are safely in our care, and offer an appointment time. Alternatively, you are welcome to make contact with our team to organise the collection appointment.

If you are not ready to collect the ashes, we can keep them safely in our care for up to 12 months following the cremation. During this time, our friendly client services team will maintain contact.

At the time of the collection appointment

Collection appointments take place at our main office at the Geelong Eastern Cemetery, in a private appointment room.

A member of our client services team will guide you through the process. During the appointment, photo ID will be checked to ensure that you are the Authorising Person, and your signature will be required on appropriate documentation. Please let our staff member know if you require documentation for overseas travel and this will be prepared also.

You will receive your loved ones ashes in a simple plastic urn, inside a carry bag. The client services team member will have you check the identifying label on the urn and explain how to open it in the event that this is required. Our client services team member will be able to answer any of your questions and provide any information that may be required including options regarding memorialisation.

Additional appointments can be made to discuss memorialisation options in depth, as well as purchasing an urn, organising a plaque or having ashes decanted.
