Our history

The establishment of Barrabool Hills (Highton) Cemetery was discussed at a meeting in Ceres in 1855.

Early settlers had established vineyards, sheep farms, quarrying and cropping, with many families coming from England, as well as Switzerland, Scotland and Ireland.

The Trust applied for a Government grant which enabled a Sexton’s office to be built, fences and gates erected and insurance against bushfires; the horror of Black Thursday in 1850 no doubt still fresh in residents’ minds.
